Waterfront views and panoramic terraces made Oliff’s decision to relocate from the Old Town Alexandria, VA to Canal Center Plaza an easy one. Specializing in international patent law it was important for Oliff’s office to be within proximity of the US Patent and Trade Offices in Alexandria, VA. The unique and challenging shape of the building creates many dynamic interior spaces, some of which feature views to the Washington Monument, US Capitol, Potomac River, and National Harbor.

With many international clients, it was important for Oliff’s space to have an open and welcoming hospitality-like feel to greet guests and create a destination for employees. A strong departure from their previous office space, the client team desired a transparent, light, lively overall environment balanced with a timeless feel. The design team looked to highlight the building’s location by creating a design concept the team called ‘reflections and refractions’. Clever uses of form, materiality, lighting, and proportion help to enhance the design concept. Right-sizing all functions was an important theme throughout the design. The design team took great care to study and determine optimal sizes, configurations, and space sequencing during the initial space planning and strategy phases.

Oliff’s proven and process-driven workflow was a key driver in helping to shape the open office environment. Open office areas were configured to emphasize mentorship and provide a stronger, more collaborative connection between attorneys and staff. To compliment the office functions, Oliff’s space also includes an expansive conferencing and reception area with an integrated work-café, multipurpose room and break out space. Additionally, an attorney work-lounge with library and several small collaboration huddle rooms help support a more mobile work environment.
